Rainbow Canyon is an extremely unique offering in outdoor recreational property. Reason being? It is likely one of the only truly private trout streams available anywhere in this country. Yes, truly private trout stream! Where else can someone own a piece of blue-ribbon fly-fishing water completely void of public access… of any kind? Where else can one traverse down to a personal babbling brook, knowing that they are the only angler to present that first fly to a hungry and unsuspecting trout? And not just any trout… large trout!! Large rainbow trout!!! Large rainbow and even larger brown trout!!! And to do so without even the thought of someone else being there before you, or floating a drift boat through your cast in a pool you have worked so hard to approach? Where else can you find such peace, serenity, and satisfaction known to those who pursue such a sport, with the confidence that it will always be there waiting for you, only you, and those who you choose to share it with? Oddly, it lies in the most unlikely place – North Central Nebraska. Yep… that’s right.
Stretching across a great portion of the state is an absolutely beautiful ecosystem known as the Sandhills. To the nature-observant, it is seen as one of God’s last gifts to those who relish time in the outdoors, the wildlife that live in it, and the opportunities they get to experience it in a pure form. Supporting few trees, this open-vista, rolling hills, grassland savanna, with its semi-arid climate and sandy soil produce a surprisingly exceptional amount of flora and fauna. Home to upland birds, waterfowl, turkey, deer, and pronghorn, the game is plentiful and the people few! A wonderful combination! Additionally, the Sandhills host a variety of freshwater reservoirs and lakes that offer fishing for bass, pan fish, walleye, and others. But little know of perhaps the most exciting bounty in such an unsuspecting place – large rainbows caught on a dry fly in cool meandering waters at the bottom of a rugged canyon, more reminiscent of high country, than the prairie. It is there that ponderosa pines, steep walls, and breathtaking views, watch over this little piece of paradise, protecting it from most, and spoiling the few that get to experience it. Rainbow Canyon is absolutely pristine and almost unbelievable that in this day and age, it exists.
Historically the Sandhillls had a variety of small streams and brooks that held trout. Many of the streams still do exist, but those that hold trout, are few. One of the last holdouts, and perhaps even more prolific than ever, is a small river named the Little Snake. And Rainbow Canyon sits right in the heart of it. Certainly the Little Snake, nor even the word “Nebraska”, do not come up among most anglers as they converse about the cadis fly or nymph hatch in elite fishing clubs, or is it often mentioned in Gray’s Sporting Journal complete with a lovely watercolor painting depicting a writers visit. And it isn’t even spoken out loud by those who have double-hauled it’s pool after pool, mended a line through its glistening rapids, and fought a gallant fight on fine tippet, both upstream and down, with one of it’s many 20-plus inch residents. But that is the beauty if it. Nobody knows about it! And it is the way those who possess portions of it want to keep it… a secret! And so will a new owner – a personal fishery of world-class caliber… dream come true! Because this short little tail-water of Merritt dam as it searches its way down a dramatic canyon before emptying into to the scenic river; Niobrara, the Snake’s cool waters are second to none. Like many actually famous places such as the San Juan, the Bighorn, the Lower Deschutes, and the White Rivers, it is the steady flow, cool, year round temperatures, and rich bug life of tail waters that also make Little Snake an exceptional fishery for heavy healthy trout. Just ask those who have fished it. On second thought, don’t bother, they won’t tell you. Besides, it may be impossible to find one.
